Colliding Worlds: My Guardian Fairy

Interlude: The Hidden World of Central Park Fairies

Long before New York’s skyscrapers pierced the clouds, Central Park was wild woodland a thin place where the veil between human and fey realms wore thin. When the city grew around it in the 1850s, ancient fairy clans from Europe and indigenous spirit-kin merged into the green heart of Manhattan, binding their magic to the land itself.

Two great factions formed, mirroring human duality.

The Good Fairies, called the Luminari, dwell in sunlit glades and flowering meadows. They feed on gratitude and joy, granting small blessings humans call “lucky breaks” a found wallet, a missed train that saves a life, a sudden inspiration. Their wings shimmer silver and pastel; their laws demand purity of intent.

The Naughty Fairies, the Umbrari, nest in shadowed thickets and rocky outcrops. They thrive on chaos and lessons learned the hard way, targeting darkened auras with tricks and minor misfortunes a spilled drink on a bully, lost keys for the chronically late. Their wings burn crimson and black; their creed: mischief teaches growth.

Both factions coexist under an uneasy Accord sealed in 1880: never reveal the hidden realm to humans, never interfere permanently in mortal lives, and never cross into the other’s territory without cause.

Yet not all fairies fit. Some, like Elara, are born between wings of mixed hues, hearts pulled both ways. They are tolerated but never fully welcomed, forever outsiders in their own world.

The park itself sustains them: ancient oaks hold council halls invisible to human eyes; moonflowers power glamour spells; the Reservoir mirrors portals to distant fey realms.

Humans pass through daily, unaware that every unexplained stroke of luck or comical mishap might be the work of wings no bigger than a butterfly’s.

Until one reckless flight and one human forehead cracked the veil forever.
